Job Description & Key Responsibilities
Alaan is the Middle East’s first AI‑powered spend management platform, founded in 2022 to help businesses streamline expense tracking, corporate card usage and financial reporting. Within three years the company has become the #1 expense management solution across the UAE and KSA, serving more than 2,000 leading enterprises such as G42, Careem, McDonald’s, Tabby and CarSwitch. Backed by Y Combinator and top investors like Peak XV (formerly Sequoia India & SEA), Alaan combines cutting‑edge AI automation with deep accounting integrations, delivering real‑time insights that have saved its customers over AED 100 million.
The engineering team at Alaan is a blend of talent from McKinsey, BCG, Goldman Sachs, Careem and other high‑growth startups. This creates a fast‑paced, learning‑rich environment where junior engineers get to work side‑by‑side with senior architects on production‑grade code. As a Fullstack Intern you will be immersed in the entire product lifecycle – from design discussions and API definition to writing clean code, debugging issues and shipping features that impact thousands of daily users.
**Key Responsibilities**
1. Design, develop and maintain backend services using Node.js, Express.js and NestJS.
2. Build and document RESTful APIs that connect various micro‑services and third‑party integrations.
3. Write efficient SQL queries, manage schema migrations and optimise database performance on PostgreSQL/MySQL.
4. Contribute to frontend features using React.js and Next.js when required, ensuring seamless UI‑API interaction.
5. Investigate and resolve bugs, performance bottlenecks and reliability issues across the stack.
6. Participate in code reviews, adopt best‑practice coding standards and improve code quality.
7. Collaborate with product managers, designers and senior engineers to translate requirements into production‑ready features.
8. Take ownership of small‑to‑medium sized features, gradually moving to more complex problems as you grow.
9. Write unit and integration tests to maintain high test coverage and system stability.
10. Document technical decisions, API contracts and deployment procedures for future reference.
**Tech Stack**: Node.js, TypeScript, Express.js, NestJS, PostgreSQL/MySQL, React.js, Next.js, Git, Docker (basic), CI/CD pipelines.
**Growth Path**: Interns who demonstrate strong problem‑solving skills and ownership can transition to full‑time Software Engineer roles, with opportunities to specialize in backend, frontend or full‑stack tracks. Alaan encourages continuous learning through mentorship, internal tech talks and exposure to product‑level decision making.
**Why Join Alaan?** You will be part of a high‑impact fintech that is reshaping finance operations in the Middle East. The role offers real responsibility from day one, a supportive hybrid culture, and a competitive stipend. Working at Alaan means learning from industry veterans, building scalable products, and contributing to a platform that directly saves millions for its customers.
