With a presence in over 40 countries, the company powers millions of servers, clouds, and containers worldwide through its flagship products such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), OpenShift, Ansible, and a suite of cloudβnative tools. The organization thrives on a communityβdriven model, encouraging collaboration, transparency, and continuous learning. Employees, known as Red Hatters, enjoy a culture that values merit, diversity, and the freedom to innovate, making it an attractive destination for fresh talent looking to make a real impact in the openβsource ecosystem.
The Software Engineering Intern role is designed for finalβyear undergraduate students who are eager to dive deep into product development. Interns are not relegated to peripheral tasks; instead, they work sideβbyβside with senior engineers, product managers, and quality teams on realβworld features that ship to customers. The internship spans multiple projects across Global Engineering, offering exposure to technologies such as Ansible automation, RHEL, OpenShift, AI/ML pipelines, and modern cloudβnative stacks. Interns will receive a structured learning curriculum, mentorship, and the chance to network with a global cohort of peers.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Collaborate with a mentor to design, develop, and maintain code in Python, Golang, or comparable languages.
2. Implement new features, debug existing functionality, and track issues in Red Hat products like RHEL and OpenShift.
3. Write clean, testable code and contribute to code reviews.
4. Participate in Agile ceremonies, sprint planning, and standβups.
5. Work closely with Quality Engineering to ensure highβquality releases.
6. Liaise with Designers, Product Management, and Documentation teams throughout the product lifecycle.
7. Contribute to openβsource projects and internal tooling.
8. Document technical decisions and create knowledgeβsharing artifacts for the broader team.
9. Attend technical talks, workshops, and community events organized by Red Hat.
10. Provide feedback on intern program improvements and mentor future cohorts.
The tech stack revolves around Python, Golang, Java, JavaScript, Git, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines. Successful interns often continue as fullβtime Software Engineers, progressing through Red Hatβs wellβdefined career ladder that rewards technical depth and leadership. Joining Red Hat offers exposure to cuttingβedge openβsource technologies, a collaborative global community, and a clear path to become a thought leader in enterprise software. The internship not only builds technical competence but also hones soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and problemβsolving, making it a launchpad for a thriving career in software engineering.
