Job Description & Key Responsibilities

The role of a Mainframe Apprentice is designed for recent graduates who have completed foundational training in mainframe technologies. Under the mentorship of senior developers, the apprentice will gain handsβon experience in developing, testing, and supporting mainframe applications. This apprenticeship serves as a launchpad for a longβterm career in mainframe engineering, a niche yet highly demanded skill set in the banking and insurance domains.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Supporting mainframe application development and maintenance under senior guidance.
2. Creating, modifying, and executing basic JCL jobs and analyzing job outputs.
3. Performing basic COBOL coding, testing, and debugging.
4. Writing and executing simple DB2 SQL queries and assisting with dataβrelated tasks.
5. Analyzing compile errors, JCL errors, and job abends with supervision.
6. Following established coding, testing, documentation, and changeβmanagement processes.
7. Learning the organizationβs mainframe tools, applications, and business processes.
8. Collaborating closely with senior developers and support teams, gradually taking ownership of assigned tasks.
9. Participating in code reviews and knowledgeβsharing sessions.
10. Maintaining accurate documentation of work performed.
Technical stack revolves around COBOL, JCL, DB2, VSAM, CICS, z/OS concepts, and various mainframe utilities. The apprenticeship offers a clear growth path: after mastering the basics, the graduate can progress to a Mainframe Developer, then to Senior Developer, and eventually to Technical Lead or Architecture roles, with opportunities to move into consulting or project management.
