About the role

S&P Global is a world‑leading provider of essential intelligence that powers financial markets, corporations, and governments. With a heritage spanning more than a century, the company operates across four core divisions – Ratings, Market Intelligence, Dow Jones Indices and Platts – delivering data, analytics and insights that help clients make informed decisions. Headquartered in New York, S&P Global employs over 35,000 professionals worldwide and is known for its culture of integrity, discovery and partnership. The firm invests heavily in technology and talent, offering employees the chance to work on large‑scale data sets, cutting‑edge analytics platforms and industry‑defining research. The Data Analyst – Fundamentals COE role sits within the Fundamentals Center of Excellence, a specialised team that safeguards the accuracy, consistency and quality of financial data used across S&P Global’s products. As a fresher, you will be mentored by senior analysts and COE leads, gaining hands‑on exposure to US GAAP‑based financial statements, audit‑style validation techniques and enterprise‑grade quality frameworks. Your day‑to‑day work will involve reviewing balance sheets, income statements, cash‑flow statements and related disclosures, performing cross‑statement checks, variance analysis and documenting any discrepancies for resolution. Key responsibilities include: 1. Validate and review financial data against US GAAP standards under guidance. 2. Perform classification, mapping and reasonableness checks on balance‑sheet, P&L and cash‑flow items. 3. Conduct basic cross‑statement reconciliations and variance analyses. 4. Identify data gaps or inconsistencies and raise clear, documented escalations. 5. Support internal quality‑control checks and audit‑readiness activities. 6. Maintain detailed documentation of review findings, corrective actions and SOP adherence. 7. Follow standard operating procedures, checklists and quality controls consistently. 8. Collaborate with peers and senior team members to clarify accounting treatments. 9. Participate in training sessions, knowledge‑sharing forums and continuous‑learning initiatives. 10. Contribute to process‑improvement ideas that enhance data reliability. The tech stack is modest for a fresh role – advanced Excel, basic SQL for data extraction, and internal data‑validation tools. Over time, analysts may gain exposure to Python, Tableau or PowerBI as the COE expands its automation capabilities. The growth path can lead to senior analyst positions, subject‑matter expert roles, or transition into broader financial analysis, audit or data‑governance careers within S&P Global’s global network. Why join S&P Global? The company offers a structured learning environment, mentorship from industry veterans, and the chance to work on data that powers decisions for Fortune‑500 firms and governments. Competitive compensation, comprehensive health and wellness benefits, flexible time‑off and a strong focus on continuous learning make it an attractive launchpad for ambitious graduates seeking a long‑term career in finance and data quality.

Technical questions 5
What is the difference between WHERE and HAVING clauses in SQL? Answer
Model answer: WHERE filters rows before any groupings are applied, while HAVING filters aggregated groups after GROUP BY has executed.
Explain SQL Window functions: ROW_NUMBER(), RANK(), and DENSE_RANK(). Answer
Model answer: ROW_NUMBER() assigns unique sequential integers. RANK() assigns identical ranks to ties and skips ranks. DENSE_RANK() assigns identical ranks to ties without skipping rank numbers.
How do you handle NULL and missing values during data cleaning in Python/Pandas? Answer
Model answer: Use .isna().sum() to identify missing values. Impute with mean/median using .fillna() or remove with .dropna(subset=[...]) depending on variance impact.
What is the difference between Star Schema and Snowflake Schema in Data Warehousing? Answer
Model answer: Star Schema has denormalized dimension tables directly connected to the central Fact table. Snowflake Schema normalizes dimension tables into sub-dimensions to minimize redundancy.
How do you calculate MoM (Month-over-Month) growth in SQL? Answer
Model answer: Use LAG(revenue, 1) OVER (ORDER BY month) to fetch the previous month's revenue and compute (revenue - prev_revenue) / prev_revenue * 100.
