About the role

Nostavia is a fast‑growing health‑tech startup based out of Slovenia that focuses on aggregating, normalising and delivering health data from a multitude of third‑party providers. The company’s platform powers hospitals, clinics and research institutions by offering a single, secure API that abstracts away the complexities of dealing with heterogeneous data formats, compliance requirements and legacy systems. With a strong emphasis on data security, scalability and real‑time processing, Nostavia has quickly become a trusted partner for several European health organisations and is now expanding its engineering talent pool to build the next generation of backend services.

As a Backend Engineering Intern you will join the core product team and work directly with the founders and senior engineers on mission‑critical integrations. This is a fully remote, six‑month internship that offers a stipend of β‚Ή25,000 per month and the possibility of a pre‑placement offer (PPO) based on performance. The role is designed for students who already have solid Python fundamentals, have contributed to sizeable GitHub projects, and are comfortable handling RESTful APIs, databases and cloud infrastructure.

It is not a beginner‑level position; you will be expected to deliver production‑grade code and take ownership of end‑to‑end features.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain third‑party API integrations for health data providers.
  • Build data normalisation pipelines that transform raw JSON payloads into a unified schema.
  • Implement validation rules and automated test suites to ensure data integrity.
  • Write efficient SQL queries and manage PostgreSQL schemas for high‑volume workloads.
  • Containerise services using Docker and orchestrate deployments on AWS.
  • Collaborate with product managers to translate business requirements into technical specifications.
  • Document APIs, data models and operational runbooks for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in code reviews, contribute to the team’s coding standards and mentor junior peers.
  • Monitor performance metrics and optimise latency and throughput of backend services.
  • Assist in setting up CI/CD pipelines to streamline releases.

Tech Stack: Python, REST APIs, OAuth, Webhooks, JSON, PostgreSQL, SQL, Docker, AWS, Data Pipelines, Automation.

Growth Path: High‑impact contributions can accelerate your learning curve dramatically. Interns who demonstrate strong problem‑solving abilities and ownership can see their responsibilities grow 2‑5Γ— within six months, leading to a full‑time PPO, mentorship opportunities, and exposure to enterprise‑level architecture decisions.

Why Join Nostavia? The company offers a vibrant, remote‑first culture where engineers are trusted to manage their own schedules while delivering real value to the healthcare ecosystem. You will work on cutting‑edge health‑data integration challenges, gain hands‑on experience with cloud services, and build a portfolio that stands out to future employers.

The mentorship from the founding team, coupled with the chance to see your code powering live health systems, makes this internship a unique springboard for a career in backend engineering.

Technical questions 5
What is the difference between WHERE and HAVING clauses in SQL? Answer
Model answer: WHERE filters rows before any groupings are applied, while HAVING filters aggregated groups after GROUP BY has executed.
Explain SQL Window functions: ROW_NUMBER(), RANK(), and DENSE_RANK(). Answer
Model answer: ROW_NUMBER() assigns unique sequential integers. RANK() assigns identical ranks to ties and skips ranks. DENSE_RANK() assigns identical ranks to ties without skipping rank numbers.
How do you handle NULL and missing values during data cleaning in Python/Pandas? Answer
Model answer: Use .isna().sum() to identify missing values. Impute with mean/median using .fillna() or remove with .dropna(subset=[...]) depending on variance impact.
What is the difference between Star Schema and Snowflake Schema in Data Warehousing? Answer
Model answer: Star Schema has denormalized dimension tables directly connected to the central Fact table. Snowflake Schema normalizes dimension tables into sub-dimensions to minimize redundancy.
How do you calculate MoM (Month-over-Month) growth in SQL? Answer
Model answer: Use LAG(revenue, 1) OVER (ORDER BY month) to fetch the previous month's revenue and compute (revenue - prev_revenue) / prev_revenue * 100.
Behavioural & HR questions 3
