Role & responsibilities Job Description Must have: About the Role We are looking for an AS/400 (IBM iSeries) Software Engineer to design, develop, debug, and support applications on the IBM i platform. You will work across the full development lifecycle analysis, design, coding, testing, and production deployment — while providing ongoing application support to meet client SLAs. Prior exposure to manual/functional testing is a strong plus, as the role involves close collaboration with QA and business teams. Key Responsibilities Develop and enhance applications on the AS/400 (IBM i) platform using RPGLE, RPG/400, CLLE, and CL/400. Design and modify programs, display files, and report files to accommodate changing business and database requirements. Query and analyze data in DB2 using SQL to investigate issues and extract insights. Perform in-depth root cause analysis on defects and service requests logged by clients, and deliver timely fixes. Provide batch support across development, testing, and production environments. Carry out unit testing, integration testing, and support production deployments. Prepare technical specification documents, workflow designs, and production support handover documentation. Perform regular system maintenance and health checks, and automate housekeeping tasks where possible. Follow established change management and incident management processes. Work to meet and maintain client Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Required Skills & Qualifications 3–5 years of overall IT experience, with hands-on AS/400 development and support experience. Strong programming skills in RPGLE, RPG/400, CLLE, and CL/400 (ILE concepts). Proficiency in DB2 and writing SQL for data analysis. Experience with AS/400 development tools: SEU, SDA, RLU, and PDM. Solid understanding of debugging techniques, unit testing, and test-case design. Familiarity with ITSM/ticketing tools such as Jira. Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electronics & Communication, Computer Science, IT, or a related field). Preferred / Nice-to-Have Experience in manual, functional, regression, and smoke testing. Exposure to change management, incident management, and production support in an SLA-driven environment. Domain experience in banking/financial services (e.g., cheque/transaction processing, accounts payable/receivable, inventory management) or insurance (policy administration). Experience with payment application testing/certification (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, etc.) is a plus. Ability to create user manuals and technical documentation for end users. What Makes a Strong Candidate A detail-oriented developer who can move comfortably between coding, debugging, and support work. Strong analytical skills for reading functional specs and translating them into working, tested code. A collaborative team player who works well with development, QA, and business stakeholders. What is the difference between WHERE and HAVING clauses in SQL? Answer ▼
Model Answer: WHERE filters rows before any groupings are applied, while HAVING filters aggregated groups after GROUP BY has executed.
Explain SQL Window functions: ROW_NUMBER(), RANK(), and DENSE_RANK(). Answer ▼
Model Answer: ROW_NUMBER() assigns unique sequential integers. RANK() assigns identical ranks to ties and skips ranks. DENSE_RANK() assigns identical ranks to ties without skipping rank numbers.
How do you handle NULL and missing values during data cleaning in Python/Pandas? Answer ▼
Model Answer: Use .isna().sum() to identify missing values. Impute with mean/median using .fillna() or remove with .dropna(subset=[...]) depending on variance impact.
What is the difference between Star Schema and Snowflake Schema in Data Warehousing? Answer ▼
Model Answer: Star Schema has denormalized dimension tables directly connected to the central Fact table. Snowflake Schema normalizes dimension tables into sub-dimensions to minimize redundancy.
How do you calculate MoM (Month-over-Month) growth in SQL? Answer ▼
Model Answer: Use LAG(revenue, 1) OVER (ORDER BY month) to fetch the previous month's revenue and compute (revenue - prev_revenue) / prev_revenue * 100.
