About the role

Amazon is one of the world’s most customer‑obsessed companies, operating across e‑commerce, cloud computing (AWS), digital streaming, and AI‑driven services. With a presence in over 20 Indian cities and a workforce of more than 150,000 employees in India, Amazon offers a fast‑paced environment where innovation is encouraged at every level. The company’s culture emphasizes ownership, bias for action, and a relentless focus on delivering value to customers, making it an attractive destination for fresh talent looking to make a tangible impact.

The Programmer Analyst Intern role is designed for engineering students who want to experience building large‑scale, highly available applications that power Amazon’s core services. Interns will be embedded within a product or platform team, collaborating directly with business stakeholders, operations engineers, and senior developers. The internship spans a full‑time commitment of 6 months, during which the candidate will contribute to real‑world projects, receive mentorship from seasoned engineers, and gain exposure to Amazon’s engineering best practices.

Key responsibilities include

  • Collaborate with managers to define milestones and deliverables for assigned features.
  • Participate in daily stand‑ups, sprint planning, and code reviews with the development team.
  • Support platform migrations, configuration changes, and internal tool enhancements.
  • Write clean, production‑grade code and accompanying unit tests.
  • Debug and troubleshoot system issues, providing timely resolutions.
  • Act as a liaison between business and technical stakeholders to gather and validate requirements.
  • Utilize Amazon engineering tools such as AWS S3, DynamoDB, EC2, CloudWatch, and internal CI/CD pipelines.
  • Document design decisions, test results, and deployment procedures.
  • Identify bottlenecks in existing processes and propose automation solutions.
  • Contribute to knowledge‑sharing sessions and technical demos within the team.

The tech stack primarily revolves around Java or Python for backend services, with optional use of C++/C# for performance‑critical components. Interns will also work with AWS services (S3, DynamoDB, EC2, Lambda), SQL/NoSQL databases, Git for version control, and Linux‑based development environments. Throughout the internship, participants will receive structured feedback, performance evaluations, and the possibility of a full‑time offer upon successful completion.

Why join Amazon? The internship provides unparalleled exposure to industry‑scale systems, mentorship from senior engineers, and a clear pathway to a full‑time career. Interns gain hands‑on experience with cloud technologies, learn Amazon’s leadership principles, and become part of a global community that values diversity and continuous learning.

This experience not only strengthens technical acumen but also hones problem‑solving, communication, and leadership skills essential for a thriving engineering career.

Technical questions 5
What is the difference between WHERE and HAVING clauses in SQL? Answer
Model answer: WHERE filters rows before any groupings are applied, while HAVING filters aggregated groups after GROUP BY has executed.
Explain SQL Window functions: ROW_NUMBER(), RANK(), and DENSE_RANK(). Answer
Model answer: ROW_NUMBER() assigns unique sequential integers. RANK() assigns identical ranks to ties and skips ranks. DENSE_RANK() assigns identical ranks to ties without skipping rank numbers.
How do you handle NULL and missing values during data cleaning in Python/Pandas? Answer
Model answer: Use .isna().sum() to identify missing values. Impute with mean/median using .fillna() or remove with .dropna(subset=[...]) depending on variance impact.
What is the difference between Star Schema and Snowflake Schema in Data Warehousing? Answer
Model answer: Star Schema has denormalized dimension tables directly connected to the central Fact table. Snowflake Schema normalizes dimension tables into sub-dimensions to minimize redundancy.
How do you calculate MoM (Month-over-Month) growth in SQL? Answer
Model answer: Use LAG(revenue, 1) OVER (ORDER BY month) to fetch the previous month's revenue and compute (revenue - prev_revenue) / prev_revenue * 100.
