About the role

Cognizant is a global leader in digital, technology, consulting and operations services. With a presence in over 40 countries and a workforce of more than 350,000 professionals, the company helps clients transform their businesses through innovative solutions powered by AI, cloud, and analytics. Cognizant’s strong focus on industry‑specific expertise, especially in automotive, manufacturing, and engineering, makes it a preferred partner for Fortune 500 companies seeking end‑to‑end digital transformation.

The firm’s culture emphasizes continuous learning, collaborative problem‑solving, and a commitment to delivering high‑impact outcomes for clients worldwide.

The role of Developer (Embedded Systems) is centered on building robust, production‑grade software for automotive electronic control units (ECUs) and integrating those solutions with Cognizant’s manufacturing execution platforms – Opcenter Exec (Discrete or Process) and Teamcenter. Working in a hybrid model from Pune, you will collaborate with cross‑functional teams of hardware engineers, process specialists, and product managers to design, implement, and maintain features that improve manufacturing efficiency, product quality, and compliance with stringent automotive standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and test embedded software components in Embedded C for automotive ECUs, adhering to industry coding standards.
  • Implement real‑time modules that interface with vehicle hardware, ensuring deterministic performance and safety.
  • Configure and extend Opcenter Exec workflows (routing, sequencing, traceability) to streamline automotive production lines.
  • Work with process engineers to translate plant requirements into Opcenter Exec configurations that boost throughput.
  • Integrate Teamcenter for requirements management, design data handling, and change control across the product lifecycle.
  • Analyse existing solutions to identify defects, performance bottlenecks, and usability gaps; deliver corrective enhancements.
  • Collaborate with QA teams to define test scenarios, prepare test data, and support verification activities.
  • Document design decisions, configuration settings, and operational procedures for knowledge sharing.
  • Participate in code and configuration reviews, providing constructive feedback and ensuring architectural compliance.
  • Assist in deployment of embedded software and Opcenter Exec solutions to test and production environments, preparing deployment artifacts and supporting cut‑over activities.

Tech Stack: Embedded C, Real‑Time Operating Systems (FreeRTOS/RTLinux), CAN/LIN communication, Opcenter Exec (Discrete/Process), Teamcenter PLM, Git, JIRA, Linux, debugging tools (JTAG, Oscilloscope).

Growth Path: Starting as an Embedded Developer, you can progress to Senior Developer, Technical Lead, Solution Architect, or Product Manager within Cognizant’s automotive practice, gaining exposure to cutting‑edge AI‑enabled manufacturing solutions.

Why Join Cognizant? You will work on high‑impact automotive projects for global OEMs, leverage industry‑leading platforms, and benefit from a robust learning ecosystem that includes certifications, mentorship, and internal mobility. The hybrid work model offers flexibility while keeping you connected to a vibrant community of innovators.

Technical questions 5
Explain OOP (Object-Oriented Programming) principles with real-world examples in Embedded C. Answer
Model answer: 1. Encapsulation (data hiding via private fields/getters). 2. Abstraction (hiding implementation complexity). 3. Inheritance (code reusability). 4. Polymorphism (method overriding/overloading).
What is the time and space complexity of QuickSort vs MergeSort? Answer
Model answer: QuickSort: Average O(N log N) time, O(log N) space. Worst O(N^2). MergeSort: Guaranteed O(N log N) time, but requires O(N) auxiliary space.
Explain the difference between SQL Indexing (B-Tree vs Hash) and when not to use an index. Answer
Model answer: Indexes speed up SELECT queries via B-Trees. However, they slow down INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE operations because indexes must be updated on disk. Avoid on low-cardinality columns (e.g., boolean flags).
What happens under the hood when you enter a URL in a browser? Answer
Model answer: 1. DNS lookup (resolves IP). 2. TCP 3-way handshake (SYN, SYN-ACK, ACK). 3. TLS negotiation for HTTPS. 4. HTTP GET request sent. 5. Server responds with HTML/CSS/JS. 6. Browser renders DOM & CSSOM tree.
What is the difference between REST and GraphQL APIs? Answer
Model answer: REST uses multiple fixed endpoints with possible over/under-fetching. GraphQL uses a single endpoint allowing clients to query exact fields in a single request.
